THE ROLE
To service fire alarm and associated systems in line with the current regulations. Liaising with relevant department’s to ensure best practice and the most cost effective solution. To complete and return all Company documentation and certification to comply with the Company’s ISO 9001 systems and LPS1014 procedures. To work as a team with colleagues and the Senior Engineer to enhance the Company’s reputation in quality and customer service.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
§ Carry out scheduled routine servicing in a timely, efficient and cost effective manner in line with our clients’ quality standards
§ Carry out all other necessary works required at customer premises in accordance with our client’s quality standards
§ Give prompt and efficient attention to emergency call outs received during working hours including outside of working hours
§ Support the rota schedule as required to maintain a reliable and responsive out of hours service for our clients customers
§ Effectively communicate with our clients’ customers to ensure a good understanding of system and site status, particularly system defects that affect its correct function
§ Indicate to our clients customers any Fire Safety information relevant to the site
§ Liaise with service administrators to ensure service commitments are met
§ Plan own work, including routine service/maintenance visits, emergency call out requirements and remedial repairs and minor additions to existing installations in line with service administration guidance
§ Ensure legible and timely completion of our clients’ paperwork as required
§ Be responsible for the management and security of own equipment stock in an efficient and economical manner by determining stock levels in relation to work activities and ordering stock items as and when appropriate
§ Operate in accordance with our clients requirements, Company and customer’s quality standards and health and safety requirements
§ Discuss and recommend suggestions for system/service improvement with Line Manager
§ Attend training sessions identified by our clients and identify and communicate to Line Manager any personal training and development needs
ACCOUNTABLE FOR
- Leaving our clients’ customers with fully functioning fire detection and alarm systems unless Line Manager and customer have informed of the reasons that completion is not possible before leaving the premises
- All documentation being completed and reaching the required destinations within agreed time limits
- Ensure that our clients’ customers are always well informed regarding Fire Safety requirements
- Taking care that the responsible person is satisfied with the service they receive
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Skills
- Able to work independently
- Able to plan, implement and complete service activities without assistance
- Able to identify all types of cable associated with fire detection and alarm systems and to correctly test and terminate with cable ends in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions. Understands different types of cable containment systems
- Able to operate all required test equipment
- Demonstrate a logistical approach to systems fault diagnosis and rectification
- Deal with customers, end-users, construction personnel and in-house staff in a professional manner
- Good verbal and written communication
Technical Knowledge
- Full and detailed understanding of BS5839 Part 1
- Completed Units 1, 4, 5, 6 and 8 of BFPSA Training
- Has a comprehensive understanding of the causes and cures of fire alarm problems, including an ability to recommend changes to practices and processes that may cause false alarms as well as changes to the fire detection and alarm system
- Basic Electrical Safety training (ECA)
- Manufactures training in all other equipment required. This may include VESDA, Radio and Fire Suppression and will be decided by the Line Manager based on regional needs
Standards
- BS7671 (if involved in installation work)
- To operate business procedures within the framework of BN EN ISO 9001:2000 and LPS1014
Documentation
- Able to read prepared plans and technical sketches, service and repair systems in accordance with information provided and record changes to the location of equipment on the installation drawings and the O&M manual
- Identifies and reports the requirement for new and additional works
- Accurately completes appropriate paperwork in line with our clients’ requirements
- Calculates the incidence of false alarms and prepares advice for customers on the implications of these incidents
Health and Safety
- Has completed and fully complies with the necessary Health and Safety training
- Fully understands and complies with our clients’ Health and Safety procedures
